σίλφιον, τό, eine Pflanze, laserpitium, deren Saft als Arznei und an Speisen gebraucht ward; zuerst bei Her. 4, 169. 192; Soph. frg. 945; Ar. Equ. 892 Av. 534 u. öfter; Theophr. u. Folgde. Die wohlriechende afrikanische Art, die den ὀπὸς Κυρηναϊκός gab, ist ferula tingitana od. thapsia gummitera nach Sprengel; die persische, von der der ὀπὸς Μηδικός kommt, ist unsere asa foetida.
